Character Challenge 2023: 14/31: Traveller Pirate

I have a LOT more fantasy minis than SF. Lots of reasons for this, though primarily fantasy is more generic than science fiction mostly. And the utter dominance of D&D, though with the recent OGL fiasco, that dominance may not last much longer. Killing the golden goose is rarely a good idea!

Regardless, I do have minis from games such as Zombicide:Invader and Sine Tempere (which I never played even though in theory it can be a solo game similar to Gloomhaven). And as it turned out, I had forgotten I had painted a few of these (not well, never well, but hey, at least painted!). One is a very pirate-looking dude, so today we'll see about a Rogue character. And yes, the idea of piracy in the Third Imperium has been fought over too many times, but I like the pulp ideas of SF mixed in with a more modern take.

Starting our dice rolls. we get an initial UPP A9597B. Big guy without a lot of endurance, but from the upper crust. Which interestingly does not help our prince charming turned bad boy get into the piracy career! Yet I manage with rolling a 9. Fortunately, he does get a +2 for survival with his intelligence.

Term 1 (18-23) Henchmen to Corporal

Somehow Sir Reece Skyley, of the Skyley Clan, manages to get kidnapped by pirates on his "explore the Imperium" tour that a lot of third sons and daughters tend to take just to get away from the family. He becomes a henchman of the pirate gang. As a pirate, he automatically picks up Brawling-1, and gets 3 skills this term from gaining a position and getting his promotion. Going through the tables, he must be a fighter as he picks up Brawling-2 from the personal development table and picks up Revolver-1 as a skill (and gets a DM from his dexterity). He also picks up Ship Tactics which I suppose can be used as a DM for getting ships into a boarding position?

Barely making a reenlistment, he starts term 2 as a Corporal.

Term 2 (22-25) Corporal to Sergeant

Barely surviving this term, he also manages to get promoted to Sergeant. This term he picks up a blade skill, Cutlass-1 of course! He also picks up Laser Rifle-1 as a skill, as sometimes a weapon without recoil is easier to use in zero G! He is getting put in charge of various things now, parlaying his high-born background to better choose their targets. As well as aiding in the chase and setting up better ambushes using that ship tactics skill (ambush in space? well, sure, not really possible but we'll just pretend)

Again, he barely makes it back into a career of piracy! I am really hoping he will survive and get a corsair. I may have to fake that if it does not happen, but I need to get to rank 5 (there is no rank 6 for the pirates). So, at least 2 more terms, then fight aging as well.

Term 3 (26-29) Sergeant to Lieutenant

He survives readily, and squeeks by with a promotion to rank 4, Lieutenant. He picks up Streetwise-1 and a +1 strength for a UPP of B9597B. Sir Reece is bulking up - perhaps he's heard of this Aslan assassin that was hired to hunt him down?

Sadly, I do NOT make the reenlistment roll - our pirate will be out on his own now. Pirates are a fickle bunch! We get 5 rolls: 3 for 3 terms, and 2 more for the rank 4. No chance of a Corsair though.

Mustering Out

Somehow, 4 has nothing in the benefits table, and of course I roll that. Though I did roll a 6 on the cash, so he has Cr50,000. The next two rolls we reduce his social stat - he has finally been disowned by the Skyley Clan! He also picks up another Cr10,000. Last roll on the benefit table gives him a mid-passage to wherever he wants. Going to take that Cr10,000 and assume he has a revolver, his cutlass, and a laser rifle. Clothing and other expenses by the time he shows up.

A tall and somewhat dashing man, his has a pet gorky that constantly sits on his shoulder. Dressing in what some say are a quite foppish style, he does manage to pull off the cape with the skull and crossbones. His ready grin and apparent over-abundance of self-confidence makes him both easy to approach and befriend. Thought the large gorky is a bit off-putting to many. He gets into fights easily, but often befriends those he fights. It seems to all be some sort of a game to him and one can't seem to help but like him despite misgivings.

Just how does a pirate board a passenger vessel?
