Character Challege 13 of 31: Planet Mercenary Legal Counsel

While still needing to come up with a company name, I'll work through the other main character types they need. Wanting to get the legal counsel so the to-be-named company can get some good deals for mercenary missions.

Step 1: Pick Command Package

Legal counsel. Bonus skills: +2 Deceive. +2 Negotiate, +2 Dodge, +1 Combat.

Step 2: Background Package

Street Criminal. He earned his legal degree in prison! +2 Deceive (+4 total). +2 Dodge (+4 total), +2 Explosives (well, there was a reason he was in prison!)

Step 3: Sophont

Rolling again, where 1-5 is common, 6 is uncommon & reroll. 6 - uncommon sophont. There are 9 so 1..9 random generator gives us 8 for a Tausennigan Ob'enn. Which are basically congenitally xenophobic koala bears. Gets +1 to any 4 skills, but -1 penalty for dealing with anyone other than other ob'enn.

Step 4: Pick Skills and Specialties

Starting with the +5 dodge ranks, this little legal ob'enn has a pretty good +9 dodge. Which is the max allowed for starting characters. As he is going to be the legal counsel, I want to make sure he is really good for that mostly. But he will still need be able to shoot as sometimes bargaining ends up with drawn weapons. At least in this game world.

Having 44 points to spread around, Maximmilion Dependence On Nothing seems to specialize in black market negotiations, but also has good contract skills. Giving him the max of 9 in explosives and negotiations and the 7 in contract. Not a great fighter but he can pilot air vehicles. I also gave him thrown weapons because, well, boomerangs. And also they are short so probably do not want to get too close to opponents. A few other odds and ends to hopefully make him a bit useful to the company.

Step 5: Derived Statistics

Defense is 5 + dodge, so 14. Health is endurance + 6 or 8 for the ob'enn.

Step 6: Finishing touches

We already named him, but let's delve a bit into his background a bit. While most Tausennigan Ob'enn are far too xenophobic to serve in mixed forces, an AI, Petey, has been rehabilitating to "cure" them of this pathological issue.  Maximmilion Dependence On Nothing is a case in point: though he did steal the aircraft after expertly destroying the experimental aircraft hangar and only the hangar, a few years in prison with Petey helping him, Max earned his lawyer license and mostly gets along with other sophonts. His has 5 earrings in each ear and quickly picks up the location of the local black market. As a result, he has gotten some questionable deals on equipment for the company. Not that Captain Blitterhorn actually cares about: it is the end result that matters.

And it is really hard to find a SF koala so AI to the rescue.

Random Stuff

Brulk the barbarian from day 12 is an illegal build - that toughness needs a ST of 12. So, the character has my 1st choice, the missile weapon skill so he can shoot arrows a lot better. We actually played a bit, but it took longer to create the characters than I expected. While I did have 2 books, getting their characters with way they wanted to do them was more complicated. Part of that is that two of the players are relatively new to RPGs, and TFT is a point buy system that has a lot of permutations. But in the end, we did manage to play at least for a bit before the day was done.

Anyway, I may just leave him as-is on the blog.

I will have to read the rules on the company side of things. Not sure if that would count as a character though in a way it is. In a way if you squint sideways at least.
